what are building regulations?
Building Regulations set the standards for the design and construction of buildings in the UK. They protect the health and safety of people in and around buildings. They cover areas such as structure, fire safety, insulation and energy efficiency, ventilation, drainage and access, including facilities for disabled people.
Building regulations approval is different from planning permission. Planning permission decides whether a development can go ahead; building regulations approval covers how it is built.
when do you need approval?
If you're carrying out building work covered by the regulations, you're legally responsible for making sure it complies, and for getting approval from a building control body. Common examples include extensions, loft conversions and removing internal load-bearing walls.
If you don't apply, or the work doesn't comply, you could be served with an enforcement notice for non-compliance.
At Edith Garland Architecture, we can help with your application, providing advice and the detailed drawings that building control needs. Speak to our friendly team to find out whether the regulations apply to your project.
